Nice Deepak Chopra just got his 33% bonus while postal workers go back to work despising both CPC management and CUPW all thanks to Stephen Harper’s Conservatives.
The only hope working people have is that the NDP, Liberals and the Bloc join as one party to defeat the Conservatives in the next election instead of the vote splitting that gave the Conservatives a majority in the first place.
ndp+libs=no majority - 2011/06/26
Majority governments do not work! Please refer to Steven and his gang as the reform party!
empty pockets - 2011/06/26
33% of all wealth created since Steven took over has gone to 1% of the population.By the time we get rid of him it will be 50%.
Tyler - 2011/06/26
With the final selection offer in other words managements offer what’s to stop them from stripping all your benefits such as your medical, dental and
holidays for all existing employees not just the new hires? Does anyone have any insight on what could be inserted in management’s un-negotiated offer?
Ty - 2011/06/25
Thanks to both sides for bringing an already struggling corporation deeper into turmoil and giving its employees a worse name than they already had. I never thought to much of the government until now that they are the only ones caring enough to send me back to work. I do not care about your silly stupid little issues regarding new employees. It takes 2 new employees to do the 1 job that I do for you. As for up grading the equipment that we currently use. Please do! Countries with a lower standard of living have kept up with times better than CPC.
As for the union… I think if your guys want to stick around and not have to come back to the current position then get a grip. The only thing that remains constant is change!
Chris - 2011/06/25
I am tired of many people saying “its 2011 we don’t need Canada post” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The people who believe this don’t understand how the economy works! I have not received mail in over 2 weeks and it is costing me a ton of money. I do a lot of ebaying buying and selling as well as operate a bullion website. Canada Post is a valuable asset and we need to get the ball rolling again!
Paul - 2011/06/25
Canada post has the cheapest rate to send everything around the world. Price & service counts and only because of the people who deliver the service NOT MANAGEMENT. C p c make profit of over $300 millions it’s true and they don’t want to share with employees. Corporation is nothing without employees. 4 years contract will go with conservative help it’s only a matter of time everyone is going to pay for it. The stamps are to cheap it should be $.85 cpc is doing a big favor to other big corporations like Rogers Amex visa banks Costco walmart mastercard you name it they send letters for free almost they get customers for free. Rates are cheap and government is not letting them raise so can privatize the Canada post. THINK & CALL YOUR M P Save some money for your future services without your Canada post own by everyone not by private owner
Tyler - 2011/06/25
This situation that we’re in now is about the Conservatives privatizing Canada Post and other government agencies it’s blatantly obvious now. Infighting amongst Cupw members is exactly what the Conservatives/CPC want. CPC is just a pond in the Conservatives attempt to fast track their scandalous agenda. The NDP should be praised for attempting to stop this but with the conservative majority it’s forgone conclusion Canada Post will be privatized.
sbkanata - 2011/06/25
It’s 2011 we no longer need the post office.
Deven - 2011/06/26
yes we do, how else will we get our cheap goods from china
real deal - 2011/06/25
For all of you who blame the workers and the union, Shame on you for not getting the facts straight.
First of all there are a lot ofposties with university degrees who chose to work at the post office because the were not able to find jobs.
You all seem to know what goes on with this job and yet all so ignorant that you think it is a strike. IT IS A LOCKOUT DUMMIES!
You would be getting your mail had it not been for Canada post locking us out.
And if they do privatize like you all want , it will be you same people paying quadruple the amount for postage.
We are not asking for more, we simply want to keep what we have.
So I urge please take some time to get informed before you make stupid comments.
I’m listening - 2011/06/25
So they locked the workers out for a different reason than the rotating strikes?
I’m looking for more information on the situation with little luck.
Why are the workers locked out?
real deal - 2011/06/27
We were locked out cause the company new that Harper would step in as he did. Afterall he hand picked Chopra for the job. Lets call it a manufactured crisis.
MANJIT - 2011/06/25
Why so many people are blaming only unions?
Why MPs have been increasing their salaries and benefits since 2000?
Why every year big corporations have been getting tax breaks since2005?
One of thousands of livid canadians - 2011/06/25
I Will never use canada post again after this, i hope the workers are let go and they privatize it to the public( not like it takes more then a 7th grade education) there are too many people out there who need work to even let this happen, so shame on canada post, shame on jack layton for trying to prolong this and a big ol shame on the government of canada for not caring about the thousands of people theyscrewed over. Letters and packages people mailed or paid to get within a certian time were just told we dont care in the end, to me if a business charges you for something then refuses to hold up there end of bargin it illegal and I for one will want the money i paid to get express shipping backseeing as how my packages are stuck in limbo ( not my fault) i hope that they just cut out canada post all together, we dont need em anymore ( so goodluck to canada post employees that r now working at mcdonalds after this thanks to your and the governments stupidity).
manjit - 2011/06/25
Who did the lockout?
Why are you using CP instead of Fed-Ex or UPS ?
Why tou don’t feel shame on Stephen, who failed the negotiations indirectly ?
okavally - 2011/06/25
Thats too bad after all the profits go back into the goverment and you as a canadian will lose more than gain..
me - 2011/06/26
Don’t paint us all with the same brush. We were not all on strike or locked out so plese do not go into all oficces or look at your delivery person with digust many of us have signed contracts already from long ago we are in a different union as well as many of cupw did no agree with the union. It is now time to go back to work and get the post moving again.
Rob - 2011/06/25
Kevin, dig a bit more into your research and you will find that like other organizations (private and public) there are more than 1 union groups.
CUPW is the largest, workers inside, workers at the retail post offices, customer service workers, supervisors, the workers in the call centres, those whose push the pen on daily benefit, pension and payroll, engineers, purchasing clerks and even their business sales workers. These workers are represented by other bargaining groups who have already been through this and are living with the changes to benefit programs. The remaining workers are various levels of management from junior to senior and total a couple of thousand at best. So, your 17,000 is actually about 2,000 and mostly at the lower end of the scale.
Let’s hope everyone can get back to work soon and reclaim some dignity and respect from the public after this public undressing.
unhappy customer - 2011/06/25
Well done. I just signed up for paperless statements and bills for everything.
That’s 37 letters a month you will never deliver again.
With so many packages stuck in the system right now, I have now moved to UPS for all my shipping needs.
Venture one has no value to me any more.
I hope you all enjoy $10/hr EI. Good luck finding another unskilled job for what you get now.
very scary - 2011/06/25
I got my cheque from the union. Wow first time I have ever cashed a cheque on the bus
Chris - 2011/06/24
What bull- there are plenty of people who would do this job for your current wage. Your a post man how much money do you want to be paid?
Do postman even have to attend some kind of post secondary.
Get back to work you lazy people. If u won’t do your job someone else will and they won’t be striking getting 23 dollars an hour. Work is difficult no matter where. Deal with it seriously- we are waiting for our mail.
tired of the uninformed - 2011/06/25
guess what, we are trying to get back to work. we have offered several times to go back. CanadaPost won’t let us, they Locked us out!!! And the dispute has nothing to do with getting more money if you really had any facts (obviously your post secondary education hasnt educated you in actually seeking facts before speaking). We simply want safe working conditions, and equal rights. How is that a bad thing?
willing to listen - 2011/06/25
so the only issue is that workers are put in a position of danger and are having their human rights violated?
I’m pretty sure these are covered under the health and safety act?
Every worker can refuse to do something they feel is dangerous, it’s the law.
Every person is subject to the same legal rights in Canada?
Are you saying you are forced to work in conditions that are dangerous? That you are being abused?
Sound like you need to contact the ministry not strike.
I’m all ears.
A Postie - 2011/06/26
Only the people who deliver your mail go thru the real trouble of working in extreme weather conditions. People can sit on computers/laptops and write whatever they feel, but let these people go out and work with us will make them think differently.
You think the delivery of post is easy, yes but safety issues which you are not aware will make you think twice before you write these kind of comments
myfeethurt - 2011/06/26
Hey Chris, For your information, the posties (not “postman”, it’s 2011) WERE LOCKED OUT!!! NOT ON STRIKE! Get your information right, please.
CPC Employee - 2011/06/24
Wow who is worse CUPW or the NDP?
Both are seriously compromising the livelyhood of the employees of Canada Post and the businesses and citizens of Canada who rely on the postal system.
First, members of CUPW need to ban together to remove the current management of CUPW who manage to spend $42 million dollars of union dues a year and they don’t have money to pay your benefits while you are on strike because they pay themselves huge salaries, spend huge amounts of money on travel and take trips to the caribbean for training. If you complain about the management at Canada Post how can you possibily support the management of CUPW since they are not honest and transparent with you on where all the money goes. None of you will ever recover from this strike you will not get back the money lost no matter what wage increase you get!!
As for the NDP they are just grandstanding they don’t care about the members of CUPW, they are just looking for attention, they are wasting tax payers moneys dragging this vote in parliment. They are probably getting paid overtime.
Jack Layton and Denis Lemelin you are both serving your own needs and not those of Canada Post employees or the public.
theresa whynot - 2011/06/24
when the hell can we have our mail it is hurting us we can;t pay our power bills you know we can charge you for holding our mail it is in our name
Theresa whynot - 2011/06/24
The mail is only yours when it is in your mailbox. And once you put your letter in the mail box that the lc picks up it is Canada posts
Robbie - 2011/06/24
NO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHOS WORSE CPC MANAGEMENT,THATS WHO,PEOPLE WHO ARE GREEDY AFTER THERE BONUSES.EMPLOYEES DESERVE MORE THAN $24/HR,THAT AINT THAT MUCH MONEY NOWADAYS.THIS BILL AND BACK TO WORK LEGISLATION IS A CRIME TO EVERY WORKER WHO STANDS UP FOR THERE RIGHTS.MANAGEMENT SHOULD ALSO GET A PAY DECREASE,CHOPRA MAKES $626K A YEAR,HES OVER PAID,HE MAKES MORE THAN THE LONGSHORE UNION PRESIDENT BY DOUBLE,WOW WHT A JOKE
Caroline - 2011/06/24
gimme a break, i work 2 jobs, 1 at 9.65/hr, the other at 10.30/hr, and i am so happy to have enough to just barely pay my bills and feed my family, I think everyone needs to stop trying to be so fancy, and by fancy i mean greedy:)
cheryl - 2011/06/26
CHOPRA- should not get a raise at all, no head of any department or management need a raise, postal workers -yes make enough, but if they don’t get a raise why should anyone else.
postal workers, take cabs everywhere, save the money and bus it, why should they get cab rides to there points.that money could go for this raise they wanted.
the people in the postal depots that do all the work, make alot to. so anyone that wants to leave there postal jobs, give them to someone who wants the jobs.
they all need to stop complaining, and Harper needs to stop giving raises to management.
Rob - 2011/06/24
also what needs to be done is chopra needs a pay reduction and MANAGEMENT NEEDS A PAY FREEZE,THERE WAY OVER PAID FOR SITTING ON THE COMPUTER AND WALKING AROUND EVERY FEW HRS.
Avoid ePost No More - 2011/06/24
NDP you are foolish. CUPW you are foolish.
You postal workers who don’t like your union seriously need to hire some laywers to get them off your backs. They are a burden to EVERYONE!
I was going to avoid using ePost cuz I like my bills on company statements, I am going to print it anyway for my small biz record. NOW, with NDP delaying this back to work thing, my choice is limited. I signed up on ePost last week but didn’t add any companies, this weekend I will actually add companies to it.
The NDP & CUPW are taking CPC down. Who’s next?
kevin - 2011/06/24
reply for bystander,
Thanks for your info on the Vancouver police dept.Did you know a the starting wage for a 1st class constable on the Toronto police force is $81043? And did you know the basic wage for a newly elected federal MP is $157,731?
Even at top rate of pay after 28 years service, a postal worker does not even come close to those salaries[and should not.]So, I don’t understand why you would compare us to other lines of work. Any wage or benefit the employees recieve was agreed upon by previous postal administrations. They must of felt the employees were worth that rate or they would not have NEGOTIATED the scale of wages and benefits.
Your other point regarding 72000 employees, needs to be put in perspective.
72000-55000 union employees is 17000 employees.I assume these employees will fall under some level of management [23% of the workforce!!!]
Still waiting for someone to show us a comparable company with a similar level of management.
Sarah - 2011/06/25
Did you know the average soldier who defends your country and your right to strike make only about 50k per year before all of the ridiculous deductions? Maybe you should consider yourselves lucky before you start complaining about how hard you have it. Try delivering mail in Afghanistan… Then we’ll talk about how much you “deserve” to be paid.
Sunk - 2011/06/24
Thanks to NDP for ruining any chance my small business had of surviving this, had the bill been tabled and passed with the speed it should have there would have been a chance we could have came out the other side of this with something left.
How many millions (billions?) of tax payers dollars have been or will be wasted due to the NDP dragging this out? How many small business owners/ employees are going to lose their jobs or lively hood? How many NDP representatives will be left in the House of Commons after the next election? The answer to two of those questions is ALOT, the answer to the other is NOT MANY. You figure it out…
Daniel - 2011/06/24
As a small business owner, I feel for you and what you’re going through.
I sincerely hope your business will in fact make it through this unnecessary waste of time and money.
With the understanding that legislation is passed, perhaps you can find an investor or bank to help you sustain your business until you can turn profits.
I wish you all the best.
Brenda - 2011/06/26
All that needed to be done was for the Conservative government to order Canada Post Corporation to put the keys in the locks and open the doors. We would have gladly returned. We did not LOCK the doors at Canada Post, management did. In fact I was at work on night shift when i was ordered to get my personal belongings and GET OUT! So if there is to be any finger pointing here…..point them at Canada Post and not the workers!!!!!
Andy - 2011/06/24
Shame on you! We all appreciate your effort to help Canadian economy by…. not doing your job! Well done! The less we all work the better off we all are! This goofy situation will force millions of Canadians to reconfigure their business and lives so there will be NO postage involved! EFT and e-mail works even better than you! Don’t you realize that! Do you really want to become a dinosaur? Every day of this stupid agony brings your existence closer to an end!
joe - 2011/06/24
i hope canada post gets totally shut down after this
so we can privatize, like the toronto garbage pick up
enough of the foolishness.
Daniel - 2011/06/24
I don’t believe shutting down Canada Post is the answer. I do believe employees should not have the right to strike. For each employee that doesn’t want to work for what they’re already getting, there are 3 Canadians who will.
kingtut - 2011/06/24
Why are the NDP clowns in parliament delaying the passing of the bill? CP and CUPW are not talking and they have not been able to resolve anything for 8 months…do they really think that CP and CUPW can find a resolution at this stage? The workers have asked to see the latest CP offer and CUPW refuses. Who are they representing. Unfortunately…..many workers will lose jobs and hours, as the business model and landscape has changed. Understand why the NDP clowns cannot figure this out…..but CUPW should be doing a better job of listening and representing the workers. They should be back negotiating or they will be forced to take an offer that everyone knows….could have been better.
kingtut - 2011/06/24
they are fools that’s why! i hope ndp are finished for ever and the union is kicked out for good and also audited!!! ndp sure doesn’t look out for the small businesses or even care about the people remember that in 4 yrs
lance - 2011/06/24
Parliament was ready to force Air Canada back to work fast, but those idiots are wasting time.Mr Deepak Chopra said that it costs $100 million dollars on rotating strikes, how much are they losing everyday that they locked out the employes? People are waiting for cheques that they rely on, gifts that come through the mail, companies cannot mail hundreds of invoices because it is cheaper to use a stamp then to use a courier. He also said that he feels for the employees because they bills to pay,but then why are you and the union not talking? Why not meet have way? A lot of Posties want to go back, But why ?.
show me the money - 2011/06/25
Strange that the CPC spindoctors don’t mention how much the corporation is SAVING daily by not paying wages and benefits, building expenses, vehicle expenses…..[to name a few] during the lockout. If the whole story was told, these media reports of multi million dollar lossess would ring hollow.
Chris - 2011/06/24
Listen up i do not suport the strike or the lock out i am waiting for mail but now it mu7st be said all you people who deliver the mail should be fired and hire in new staff because you are all making life a living hell for canadians just because you control the mail does not mean you can go on strike and stop innocent people from not recievng there needed information checks what about thoes people who work for out of country employers and recieve there money only from check in the mail your forcing them in to starvation and for your own desires you should all be ashamed of your selves i hope you all get fired and new staff takes your place and a policy should be added that you cannot go on strike no matter what happenes im so disapointed in all of you and wish for all of your Demise get a life [poeple sign what ever they want you to sign and get on with mail Delivery and canada post if nogotiations break down please respond to me i will deliver the mail where all the LC wont and i bet on it there is half a million people across canada thats would do this job for min wage hire all new staff.
Lianne - 2011/06/24
Hey we are LOCKED OUT, NOT ON STRIKE! You are not the only one without your cheque, We are also missing OUR paycheck. At least you’ll get yours
Clarification - 2011/06/24
I’m pretty sure you went on strike (and voted for it)BEFORE the lock out!
ex-CP customer - 2011/06/25
You are locked out because of your rotating strike! You should not get any pay cheque, in fact you should be fired. If I was a business owner and I got a bunch of striking yahoos – I’d do the same to cut my losses.
You just given Canada Post a death sentence and you will ultimately be affected. If I were you I’d start looking for a job coz they are hard to come by these days or maybe it’s been such a long time since you last apply for a job you probably don’t know how the job market is out there.
Canada Post is a business not a milking cow.
PUBLIC NEEDS TO MADE AWARE - 2011/06/24
FIRST OF ALL THIS IS A LOCK OUT BY CANADA POST AND NOT BY THE WORKERS. WE ARE WILLING TO WORK BUT IT IS THE CORPORATION WHO LOCKED US OUT. WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE ROTATING STRIKES; AT LEAST YOU WERE GETTING THE MAIL EVEN THOUGH IT MAY HAVE BEEN DELAYED FOR A FEW DAYS. IT IS THE CORPORATION WHO TOOK OUT THE BIG STICK TRYING TO CONTROL THE WORKERS BY FORCING ONTO US A LOCK OUT SITUATION. WE DID NOT WANT THIS LOCK OUT ANY MORE THAN YOU DO. WE WANT TO WORK BUT THIS WAS THE WAY THE CORPORATION SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO WHEEL THEIR POWER OVER THE WORKERS. ALSO THERE HAD TO BE SOME DISCUSSION BETWEEN GOVENMENT AND CP FOR THEM TO ACT SO QUICKLY ON THIS. YOU THINK THAT BY JUST GOING AHEAD AND FIRING US ALL THAT THIS WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM, WELL THINK AGAIN BECAUSE THIS IS JUST THE BEGINING OF WHAT IS YET TO COME. IT IS NOT FAIR FOR THE CORPORATION TO TAKE AWAY PENSIONS FROM LONG STANDING EMPLOYEES BECAUSE THE CORPORATION GOT GREADY AND PUT THE EMPLOYEES’ PENSION IN JEOPARDY BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T STICK TO THEIR PART OF THE AGREEMENT. WORKING FOR CP IS NOT AN EASY TASK BY ANY MEANS, COME AND TRY IT YOURSELF AND YOU WILL BE GLAD TO GO BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING.
Daniel - 2011/06/24
You and your co-workers are asking to get blood from a stone. If the revenue isn’t there to support what you’re asking, stop asking and get back to work. If you didn’t make ridiculous demands, they wouldn’t have locked you out.
You think your job is difficult, you are underpaid and you’re concerned about your pensions. What about every other Canadian that works harder jobs than you for $10.25-$12.00 per hour with no benefits and no pensions? What about small business owners that are struggling to survive who can’t afford to give themselves a paycheque and pay their own bills? What about their employees that are suffering?
The amount of selfishness from you people is mind-bending. The economy and everyone around you is at stake here, so I’d appreciate it if you’d stop thinking about yourself.
How moderators allowed you to even post that comment is beyond me. It really falls under the policy: Employees are bound by the comment policy above and are asked to refrain from using the blog to harass, threaten, slander, libel, malign, defame or discriminate against co-workers, the Corporation, clients and customers.
clarification - 2011/06/24
ARE PARENTS GOING TO START LETTING THERE TWO YEAR OLDS MAKE THE RULES NOW AS WELL? IF MANAGEMENT DECIDED THAT YOUR DECISION TO RUN THERE COMPANY PART TIME WASN’T GOING TO WORK THAN THAT’S THERE DECISION TO MAKE.
ARE YOU SURPRISED THAT THERE WAS A RE-ACTION TO YOUR ACTION?!?!? ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU WERE GOING FOR?!?!?!
QUESTION-ARE WE YELLING OR DO WE JUST HATE GRAMMER?
Andy - 2011/06/25
+100
Sar - 2011/06/24
I am unable to mail a very close friend of mine in marine bootcamp.. and he has no idea this is going on..so he thinks i’m just ignoring him. he’s probably so upset right now that i’m not supporting him..even though I promised i’d write…i never got a single letter sent to him yet because of this…
i also have a package in the mail of a very special gift….
This is unfare
to sar - 2011/06/24
nobody else is getting mail either so i am sure he will figure it out
to sar as well - 2011/06/25
Also, it’s “unfair” not unfare.
If we can’t get mail, we might as well get some schooling.
the workers - 2011/06/24
IT IS TIME THE WORKERS OF CANADA POST STAND TOGETHER AND DEMAND THAT WE GO BACK TO WORK AND GET THINGS MOVING AGAIN. KEEP OUR GREAT JOBS AND TELL THE NDP TO STOP GIVING HISTORY LESSONS . WE LOOK SO BAD RIGHT NOW I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO WEARING MY UNIFORM WHEN WE GO BACK. WHY COULDN’T WE GET SOME KIND OF AGREEMENT LIKE AIR CANADA DID. WE LOOK STUPID
ex CP Customer - 2011/06/25
Not all postie are bad….there are other hard working in there I know that somehow unfortunately got dragged into this mess. Let this be a lesson and vote the union out. Canada Post employees should have a choice to join the union or not.
OMG! - 2011/06/24
Please, someone wake me…I must be in the middle of a nightmare and I can’t wake up!
Watching the debate of Bill C-6 (back-to-work legislation) on the parliamentary channel, I quickly came to realize that someone out there has a cloning machine and they are reproducing versions of Dennis Lemelin at an alarming rate…AND in both genders, to boot!
These clones sound and dress much like the original, with the exception that the they have somehow acquired neckties in the process. They have the same ability of repeating the same scripted speech over and over just as their matrix has the ability to re-submit the same old demands over and over. They have the same ability to speak passionately about century-old ideologies as if they were cutting-edge ideas to save the world for sure ruin. They waste taxpayers’ money by yapping endlessly to a mostly-empty hall that must cost a fortune to keep it running 24/7, much like Lemelin wastes millions of CUPW members’ dollars supporting obscure, foreign causes.
In a dream within a dream, I convince myself that it must indeed be a nightmare. I CANNOT believe that in a world of high-speed internet, 3D movies and interplanetary travel just around the corner, people like this actually exist.
I will soon wake up, put on that snazzy ultramarine blue uniform, and proudly go serve the people who pay my salary.
See ya all next week sometime.
B5 - 2011/06/24
Yeah.
Lets just end democracy. Its so expensive, and inefficient.
Speaking of centuries old ideology, thankfully there are bosses and their allies in political power exerting their power to exploit workers more and more to provide shining examples of progressive and new thinking.
